The European recognition of the FONDAZIONE EL.B.A. has been recently underlined by the fact that a grant from INTAS (International Association for Promotion of Collaboration with Scientists of the Former Soviet Union) of the European Union has been given to the Fondazione to formalize the network of excellence centers among the institutions involved in bioelectronics research in Europe (with the coordination of Prof. C. Nicolini). The names of the participants testify of the high potential of the network in promoting the scientific research on Pan-European scale (Profs. Barraud, Bloor, Hill, Moore, Canters, Göpel, Hampp, Xavier, Prokhorov, Skryabin, Mirzabekov, Georgiev, Mazurenko, Strel'chonok).
Within the framework of a bilateral international cooperation between Italy-Japan a project on "Protein-based Nanotechnology", one of the long-range goals of the Fondazione EL.B.A., was approved in 1995 by the Joint Italy-Japan Commission on Scientific and Technological cooperation. The project involved the Fondazione EL.B.A., the University of Genoa and Polo Nazionale Bioelettronica, represented by Prof. Claudio Nicolini, from the Italian side and the University of Tokyo and JRDC, represented by Prof. Kuniaki Nagayama, from the Japanese side.
A Copernicus project on "Biocatalytic analytical devices based on cytochromes P450 for drug monitoring and steroid synthesis" with Russian (Center of Bioengineering and Institute of Biomedical Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences), Belarussian (Institute of Biorganic Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences) and German (Universitat des Saarlandes, Dept. of Biochimie) partners, was funded in 1997 and ended in the 2000 with the achievement of interesting results presented during the final workshop held in Moscow on March 2000. Further more several collaborations with significant laboratories all over the world were implemented. It is important to stress the high level of scientific collaboration which brought to the organisation of the Nanotech Forums
In April 1999 the EL.B.A.-Foresight Conference on Nanotechnologies has been organized, being the first seminar on such topics to have been held in Europe. Some of the aspects of application of nanotechnologies in bioelectronics, biosensors, drug design and material sciences have been discussed at the conference. Around 150 researchers and scientisist coming from important research centers and universities of 18 countries have taken place in the meeting.
In September 2000 in Rome and 2002 in Mainz (Germany) the Fondazione El.B.A. organised, in collaboration with the prestigious Max Planck Society (Mainz, Germany), the second Conference on Nanotechnologies entitled "El.B.A. Max Planck Forum 2000 on Nanoscale Science and Technology". Around 120 researchers and scientisist coming from important research centers and universities of 15 countries have taken place in the meeting.
