On February 1995 the Board of Trustees of the Fondazione EL.B.A. decided to establish a permanent series of “International EL.B.A. NanoForum on Nanoscale Science and Technology" in close cooperation with leading Organizations within Europe, Russia, USA and Japan through ad hoc bilateral agreements. The EL.B.A. NanoForum I was held in Tokyo (Japan) on May 11 1995 with great success in cooperation with University of Tokyo and  ERATO inititates the series with great anticipation world-wide. Subsequent a very close cooperation was made with leading multinational companies (STM, ABB, Fiat, Elsag-Bailey, Montedison, Alenia Spazio) and the Scientific and Technological Park of the Elba Island – Polo Nazionale Bioelttronica leading to a series of workshops wth emphasis on potential industrial applications  grouped in the International EL.B.A. NanoForum II during 1996 and III during 1997 at Marciana in the Elba Island.

In December 1998 upon invitation of the Russian Government, namely the Kurchatov Institute and the Russian Academy of Sciences, the International EL.B.A. NanoForum IV was held in Moscow on the areas of Organic Nanoelectronics and Protein Nanocrystallography in close cooperation of leading multinantional companies. In successive years a close cooperation with USA was initiated leading to the International ELBA NanoForum in April 10 1999  with the Foresight Institute (California, USA) which has been organized in Rome on Nanotechnologies and has  been the first seminar on such topics to have been held between USA and Europe. Some of the aspects of application of nanotechnologies in bioelectronics, biosensors, drug design and material sciences have been discussed at the conference. Around 150 researchers and scientisist coming from important research centers and universities of 18 countries have taken place in the meeting. Representatives of large companies and international corporations like ABB, IBM, Xerox and Volkswagen have expressed interest in the application aspects of nanotechnologies.

The conference was preceeded by a satellite meeting on "Advanced Neural Sensors", held in Marciana Marina (Livorno) and by a Tutorial meeting on "Nanofabrication and Nanomanipulation" held in Rome and has been followed  by International ELBA NanoForum V on  "Nanotechnology and Industrial Development" held in Milan at the Montedison headquarters in Foro Bonaparte. Selected contributions have been plublished in the international journal "Nanotechnology". The events received a high level of coverage by national mass media, due also to the high scientific level of participants. In September 2000 the Fondazione El.B.A. organised, in collaboration with the prestigious Max Planck Society (Mainz, Germany) the International ELBA NanoForum VI, leading to a series of four yearly  Conferences on Nanotechnologies entitled "EL.B.A. - Max Planck Forum on Nanoscale Science and Technology". Typically more than 120 researchers and scientisist coming from important research centers and universities of over 15 countries have taken place in these meetings. Some of the aspects of application of nanotechnologies in bioelectronics, biosensors, drug design and material sciences have been discussed at the conference. An interesting round table entitled "Industrial Development" was held at the end of the conference, and it has seen the participation of important international groups in the field of industry, such as: IBM, ABB, NOKIA, Biomedical SORIN and others. The convention has had an anticipation in the Tutorial Satellite meeting on "Molecular Electronics, Manufacturing and Biotechnology" held in Rome during the morning of the 27th September. Thanks also to the authority of the participants, the meeting gained also  national and international interest , with participation of Nobel Prize winners.

The Fondazione EL.B.A. has then assembled  on the Fondazione EL.B.A web site the proceedings of all these events and has also prepared  a CD-Rom containing the proceedings of the Conferences and a selection of the most significant published articles of the Conference's main speakers. Following earlier successful EL.B.A. Forum in 1999 (with Foresight Institute) & 2000 (with Max Planck Society) in Rome the Fondazione El.B.A organisers have decided to launch a new more focussed format for the EL.B.A.- Max Planck Forum on Nanotechnologies 2001. Free discussion unconstrained did take place on specific scientific and technological questions relevant for Nanoscale Science (first part) and Technology (second part) being raised by the chairmen of the Forum, Professor Claudio Nicolini and Professor Wolfgang Knoll. The round table (30 speakers) has been held in Porto Conte, Sardinia, from the 13th to the 15th September 2001.

The success of such meeting has brougth the Fondazionee Elba and the Max Plank Society to organize others yearly EL.B.A.-Max Planck Foerum on Nanoscale Science and Technology being held successfully in Portoconte (2001, 2003, 2004) and in Mainz (Germany) on 25-28 September 2002 with the participation of over 140 scientists selected world-wide. Since then the International EL.B.A. NanoForum have continued with a frequency of at least of one per year with a wide range of leading international Institutions and Universities as can be seen from the attached list , establishing a strong link with the newly established Nanoworld Institute at the University of Genova and Sassari which see also the active participation of Fondazione EL.B.A. and many national and multinational companies.
